I didn't think I was going to be able to go with Dave to his parents for Thanksgiving and I was really upset. But, with quitting my job I have a bit of lee-way and I have some leave to use up, so I talked to my boss and I now have Friday off! The only bad thing about figuring this out on Monday is that we're leaving on Wednesday and his family also does a mini Christmas since the extended family (complete with aunts, uncles, cousins, & grandma) is all there. The conundrum this leaves me with is that his aunts have gotten me presents and I in return have nadda, zilch, zip for anyone. Now I know this sounds strange coming from me-the present queen- but I am genuinely worried. I love getting presents but it puts me in an awkward position. I don't like accepting things when I know I should be giving something too. IN COMES ANNE! Thank God for my cousin, she truly is amazing and so crafty and helpful (I'm working on her getting her own blog to spread all her ideas and creativity). Ok, so anyway, I was at a loss and of course I turn to Anne in a dilemma because she usually has some sort of solution.
SNOWMAN SOUP in cute little mason jars.
With only 2 nights to come up with something we quickly ruled out the cookie in a jar. Cute concept yes, but we didn't have the correct size mason jars (because apparently every household just has mason jars lying around the house like my parents do), and the work to fill the jars with ingredients of different types of cookies was way too much for my brain to handle last night after purchasing my new car! *just had to throw that in there again. What we ended up deciding on was hot chocolate mix. Dave loves hot chocolate and his family lives in freakin cold NY so I figured it'd be a good idea.
Last night I sat down and made the labels. I cut scrapbook paper, then glued a piece of plain white paper where I wrote Snowman Soup on the front and added a cute little snowflake sticker for decoration. On the back, I printed directions I found on line.
Then tonight I put the girls to work before Bible study. We added hot chocolate mix to each mason jar with flavored creamers and in some mixed in extra cocoa to make it richer and then added marshmallows as the topping.
Anne melted chocolate chips, and Andy's mints and dipped plastic spoons in them and laid them on wax paper to dry. Once they were dry, we wrapped them in sandwich bags (without the zip) and tied shut with ribbon and curled the ends. Once all the jars were done-complete with cute covers for the seals- I added them to a basket for the hostess to keep. And Voila! I'm not showing up empty handed and hopefully they'll appreciate the time I took to hand make them all something special.
